Who We Are
In the early 1950's the construction of the Savannah River Site led to a dramatic swell in the population of the tiny town of Williston, South Carolina. With the town growing to 8,000 people almost overnight, the need for a new church plant became apparent. Prompted by the Holy Spirit the people of First Baptist Church, Williston began the task of establishing this new church. Under the leadership of Rev. W. B. Underwood the church raised some $10,000, purchased a school building and moved it to tis present location where the first service was held on January 25, 1953.
Just over two and a half years later on October 9, 1955, the members of the mission chapel stepped out on their own and became a fully functioning autonomous Southern Baptist Church known today as Winfield Heights Baptist Church. Robert Cuttino was installed as the first pastor and thirty three people were recognized as charter members.
One of the great blessings the Lord has bestowed upon Winfield Heights has been the opportunity to provide 3, 4, and 5 year old children with a Christian education through our Kindergarten program currently directed by Miss Joanna Ashba. Started in 1978 under the pastoral leadership of Gregg Eaves Winfield Heights Christian Kindergarten (WHCK) still continues today providing our church the opportunity to minister to children and their families through the sharing of Jesus Christ in an educational setting.
Not only has our physical complexion changed but so have the faces. Many faithful servants have come and gone including nine men who have answered God's call to full-time Christian ministry while serving at the church. The church has been led by 14 different pastors with Jamie Wootten currently shepherding us today.
